Happy Tech Tuesday!

Our Cosmetology students recently took their learning to the next level with a trip to the Be Well Beauty & Wellness Show in New York City!

At this world class event, students explored the latest trends, cutting edge techniques, and state of the art products shaping the beauty and wellness industry. The students saw live demonstrations that provided the opportunity to see and try what professionals across the globe are using right today.

Beyond the products and showcases, this experience was all about connection and inspiration. Students were able to engage with industry experts, learn from top professionals, and see firsthand the endless career pathways available in cosmetology. Events like this bring together ideas, innovation, and creativity from around the world and our students were right in the middle of it all.

We love seeing our students step outside the classroom, expand their horizons, and bring back fresh ideas to their craft.

Last week, our Engineering students had the incredible opportunity to visit Whelen Engineering in Charlestown for an inside look at how engineering concepts are applied in the real world.

During their visit, students explored the different types of engineering that drive Whelen’s innovative work. They learned about the mechanical and industrial engineering used throughout the company’s facilities, as well as the complex chemical engineering processes involved in producing sophisticated computer chips.

Students also got to experience firsthand how several Whelen products are manufactured and assembled, giving them a behind the scenes look at the technology and precision that go into creating equipment used across many industries.

Thank you to Whelen Engineering for welcoming our students and sharing their expertise!

Recently, our Automotive program had the pleasure of welcoming David McCleary from Lundgren Subaru of Claremont to work directly with our students.

Our Level 1 students gained hands on, in depth experience learning about Subaru engines, while our Level 2 students dove into the complexities of transmissions. Opportunities like this bring classroom learning to life and give students valuable insight into the tools, techniques, and technology being used in today’s industry.

It cannot be overstated how integral our industry partners are to student success. These partnerships allow students to build real world skills, expand their knowledge beyond the textbook, and form professional connections that often lead to future professional opportunities.

While this visit supported our Automotive program, this kind of collaboration happens across all of our CTE programs. We are incredibly grateful for the businesses, organizations, and professionals who invest their time and expertise into our students futures. A huge thank you to all of SRVRTC Newport’s industry partners and the dedicated teachers who cultivate these meaningful connections every day.

"Recently, the Business & Marketing II students have completed their white belt Lean Six Sigma certification . Lean Six Sigma is a certification that is widely used within the industry to help companies identify wastes and fix problems. One major focus is specifically identifying how many defects per thousand products produced occur. It may also help to cut down production times by identifying holdups or inefficiencies.

This is an important skill for students to have, which can be used on a small scale within their own lives in a variety of ways. For example, a student could apply Lean Six Sigma to their morning routine in order to identify how to be quicker and more efficient in going about it, cutting out unnecessary things such as looking at their phone when they first wake up.

This certification is just one of the many useful skills that students learn in the business program here at SRVRTC, which can be applied throughout their lives, even if they do not go on to pursue a business-focused career. "

🩸 Thank You, Newport Community! 🩸

Thank you to the Newport community, Newport School District staff, and students who supported our 1st Annual HOSA Blood Drive. Because of your generosity, the blood collected has the potential to help 105 patients in need.

A huge shout-out to our HOSA students, who worked tirelessly to coordinate the event and served as support staff throughout the day—registering donors, assisting the American Red Cross team, and keeping everything running smoothly. Their leadership and professionalism truly made this event a success.

We also want to thank everyone who came out to donate, including those who were unable to give due to staffing limitations. We are already working with the American Red Cross to expand capacity for next year so we can welcome everyone who wants to participate.

Happy Tech Tuesday, Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays!

Last Thursday our CTE programs came together to celebrate the upcoming holidays with our annual CTE Holiday Festival. This event is a well earned reward for all the hard work our students have put in this semester!

Students enjoyed a cozy class period of treat-making, warm holiday drinks, games, a campfire, and plenty of laughs. From socializing across programs to catching a surprise visit from Santa himself, the event was filled with cheer and community spirit. A special thank you to Forestry and Animal and Plant Science for letting us use their space, and to all the teachers who went above and beyond to plan and make the event special!

Celebrating together as one CTE family is our favorite way to wrap up the calendar year. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas from all of us at SRVRTC!

This week, we’re celebrating the power of collaboration between programs here at SRVRTC!

Students from our Engineering and Welding programs teamed up to support a project for our Forestry program’s aquaponics setup. Engineering students led the design process, creating detailed plans for a custom trellis, an important structure used to support plant growth in an aquaponics system, where plants and fish work together in a sustainable growing environment.

Once the design was finalized, our Welding students brought it to life, cutting, assembling, and fabricating the trellis with precision and care. This kind of cross program teamwork mirrors the real world experience of taking an idea from concept to creation, and highlights the value of shared knowledge.

Great job to all the students and educators involved!

(Warning: Fake blood in last picture)
Our cosmetology program has been working on some awesome projects over the last couple of weeks. Level one students had the opportunity to learn multiple different braiding styles which they used to create elaborate and skillful holiday hairdos. The level two students got to dive into the world of Special Makeup Effects (SFX Makeup). They learned how to create and style the prosthetic makeup the same way artists do for movies, plays, and live action events. Watch out Hollywood, if you ask me, our students are ready to compete with the best of them!

This week our Health Science program split up into teams and had a bone to pick with one another. With a test covering the skeletal system on the horizon, students had a friendly competition to see which group could assemble and label the skeleton the fastest, along with the highest accuracy. It was both a fun and interactive way to review some of the material learned in class.

Even though we still have our skeletons out, we would like to wish everybody an amazing Thanksgiving week. Here at SRVRTC we are very thankful to have a community who supports Career and Technical Education as much as the Newport community does.

Happy Tech Tuesday!

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) has started off the year creating a culture that would help any business rise to the top! Professionalism, workplace culture, and soft skills are just a few of the important lessons our Business & Marketing Program students take with them and build on in FBLA. During events like team meetings and game night the students are able to work with each other and problem solve on situations that may not always arise in the classroom. This is an advantage for our students because it allows them to have new experiences that they are able to build off, or create new connections with other students forging stronger bonds and deeper thinking between peers when faced with new situations. We are stronger together than alone and our Business program is a prime example of how to grow and thrive as a unit.

Our Level II Education and Behavioral Science students are pinning up their skills all around the school leaving our eyes anything but "board". The students have taken on the planning and creation of multiple bulletin boards in the Tech Center as well in the High School. The students are working on collaboration skills by learning about the teachers and their subjects, and how they can creatively produce a bulletin board that draws your attention while also being functional and reaching their target audience. This project also combines a number of elements, including EBS's working with school and community competency, using educational tools (like our Cricuts, printers, and laminators) as well as project and time management.

Thank you for brightening up our space EBS!
(A number students who worked diligently on these boards are not pictured but their hard work is still appreciated.)
